Peter Matuchniak - 2014 - Destiny

Image
(52:22, Melodic Revolution Records) I was working through something the other night when I realised, I had never actually reviewed Peter’s second album, which was released towards the end of 2014. Back then I was working on what would end up as TPU Vols 1-3, and all reviewing was put sadly to one side while I stressed through typing from poorly copied hard copy fanzines. It was obviously put to one side with the “I’ll get to it later” idea. Well, it is later… Over the years Peter and I have become friends, and I have been lucky enough to review many albums he has been involved with. Here he provides guitar and vocals and has brought together a core band of Scott Connor (drums, vocals – ex-Circa), Steve Bonino (bass, vocals) and Paul Mouradjian (keyboards). Given that I am also a great fan of Steve’s work, I knew this was going to be interesting, although even I was not sure what it was going to deliver. The reason for that, is Peter has a long history going back to seminal 80’s prog ac...

Rick Miller - 2020 - Unstuck In Time

Image
(55:41; Progressive Promotion Records) Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Rick Miller has been incredibly active since the release of his second album ‘Interstellar Passage’ in 2000, and ‘Unstuck In Time’ is his fifteenth, released at the end of 2020. The album title itself is taken from Kurt Vonnegut’s ‘Slaughterhouse Five’ and is the inspiration for the title track (which closes the album and is more than 11 minutes in length). Rick tends to stay with the same musicians, and this album contains the same line-up as ‘Belief In The Machine’, apart from the return of long-time collaborator Kane Miller who was not involved with the last release. This means Ricks is joined again by Sarah Young (flute), Mateusz Swoboda (cello), Barry Haggarty (guitar), Kane Miller (guitar, violin) and Will (drums, percussion). Rick is one of a very few progressive musicians whose music is instantly identifiable and not really like anyone else. His albums are always intensely atmospheric, with artwork...

Robert Reed - 2020 - Cursus 123 430

Image
(56:21; Tigermoth Records) I have known Robert for the best part of 30 years, ever since SI Music sent me the Cyan album ‘For King and Country’ and I have followed his career with great interest since then. Apparently, when he was eight years old, he received a couple of albums for Christmas, including ‘Tubular Bells’, and while that set his own musical path in many ways, that same year his brother was given Jean Michel Jarre’s ‘Oxygene’, which he soon borrowed and played to death. While working on his lates project he felt he needed a break and to work on something totally different to clean his palate and started thinking about electronic music and what an impact it had on him over the years from Jarre to Vangelis, from Ultravox to Depeche Mode, and from John Carpenter to Tangerine Dream. Feeling inspired, he went out and purchased some analogue synthesisers and this is the result. Vangelis has undoubtedly been the main inspiration for this album, with some wonderfully layered synths...

RPWL - 2021 - God Has Failed. Live and Personal

Image
(65:57; Gentle Art of Music) Time for a slight history lesson. Back in the 90’s there was a band called Violet District who released the album ‘Terminal Breath’ which I really enjoyed. Eventually that band disappeared, but band members Karlheinz "Kalle" Wallner (guitars) and Chris Postl (bass) formed a new band with Jürgen " Yogi" Lang (vocals, keyboards) who had also featured on that album, along with drummer Philipp Rissettio, and called it RPWL after their initials. This band announced their presence in 2000 with the debut album ‘God Has Failed’ which I enjoyed, while never believing it to be essential. Over the years the band has released some superb albums, and although these days only Kalle and Yogi are still there, the decision was made to get out on the road to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the debut. However, Covid got in the way, but given that the band was fully rehearsed and ready to go they decided to film a live studio session of the entire album a...

Norwegian band Yobrepus have been around in one form or another for the better part of 15 years, although the majority of the time appears to have been used to develop the band. The band launched their debut album back in 2017. Three years down the line the band signed with Norwegian label Apollon Records, who released their second album "Mycelium Days" in the fall of 2020. Analysis. Yobrepus is a band that does a nice balancing act where they combine accessible moods and melodies with arrangements that can be borderline ambient at times and then adds in some quirky elements to this concoction. Almost like a smooth cream dessert with hidden pockets of jam, caramel and assorted spices...

We have previously given this album a mini-review, but as we recently got sent a physical edition of this production, we have now given it the slightly more detailed review we give to the physical submissions we receive at the progressor site.
