Collapse Under The Empire - 2023 - Recurring [mini-review]

(50:32; Finaltune)

German band Collapse Under The Empire are out with the album "Recurring", and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. This all instrumental affair is one that takes its main cues from the post-rock department, with a liberal array of textured instrument sounds and nervous, fluttering plucked instrument notes dancing on top of the arrangements throughout. But rather than making use of the more typical ebb and flow structure from the post-rock tradition the compositions here will to a much greater degree fluctuate in mood and intensity, with the calmer ebbs approaching ambient music landscapes while the more majestic surges touch base with score music of the kind that reference classical symphonic music as a likely source of inspiration. In addition the use of electronic sounds and flavorings adds another dimension to the landscapes explored, with associations towards the gentler sides of Vangelis just as much as possible Tangerine Dream references being a part of the experience. An album to seek out by those who enjoy post-rock explored in a bit of a different and arguably more cinematic manner.
