Buddhdatta / Paul Kidney Experience - 2023 - Buddhdatta / Paul Kidney Experience [mini-review]
(36:19; Kasumuen Records)
Japanese band Buddhdatta and Australian band Paul Kidney Experience are out with the split album "Buddhdatta / Paul Kidney Experience", and this is a production that may be of interest also for fans of progressive rock. Buddhdatta is the band that may be furthest from the progressive rock ethos here, with a tight and driving variety of rock music that incorporate many elements from the original rock 'n roll of the late 1950's and combining them with a very specific vocal style, careful mystical keyboard details and occasional folk music details that presumably are of Japanese origin. Australian band Paul Kidney Experience contribute with improvised sounding landscapes that are more floating and exotic sounding creations, often with a little bit of a sacral feel to them too, expressive and elegant in a manner which is hard to describe as well as define. This is an album that should have an appeal among those who treasure music that break and breach conventions and genre boundaries, and then in particular among those with a taste and affection for landscapes that have more of a defined mystic and psychedelic orientation. While probably not music you can define inside of a progressive rock tradition as such, this is music that will appeal also to people with a taste for the progressive rock ethos and ideals I suspect.
