Dissona - 2023 - Dreadfully Distinct [mini-review]
(15:40; Dissona)
US band Dissona are out with the EP "Dreadfully Distinct", and progressive metal is the style explored on this production. The core foundation of this band is a tight, quirky and technical variety of the form, the kind of progressive metal a band like Dream Theater kicks off with when they want to showcase their technical abilities. In between those quirky and hard movements the band use many electronic elements though, with several sections sporting more of an ambient expression, some world music elements find their way into one of the songs and on the concluding track the band appear to use mainly electronic instruments to create a more industrial sounding variety of their specific take on progressive metal. I understand that the songs and the music here are inspired by the Blade Runner universe, and while this may be accidental I do believe I heard a few callbacks to Vangelis score for the classic movie in all three songs on this EP. Which is a charming element whether it is accidental or a planned feature. A production to seek out for fans of the more technical varieties of progressive metal as well as an EP that might be of general interest for fans of the Blade Runner universe.
