Arabs in Aspic - 2023 - The Magic of Sin [mini-review]
(42:10; Karisma Records)
Norwegian band Arabs in Aspic are out with the album "The Magic of Sin", and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. This album is an English language, reworked version of the band's 2017 album "Syndenes Magi", and while the compositions have been subject to alterations beyond the language it is still not a strictly new album as such. That being said, this is a splendid production to get familiar with for those fond of a more atmospheric laden and eclectic variety of old school progressive rock. Gentle pastoral passages coexist nicely with heavy set riff driven passages here, and romantic sections dominated by elegant vocals and vintage sounding keyboards are just as much a presence here as the good, old keyboard and guitar or organ and guitar combination. With some fine lead vocal and vocal harmony details to top it off, and with tons of retro charm throughout that makes you feel that this is an album that sounds like it was recorded in the 1970's, but has been subject to a 2023 remastering. An album that should be quite the rewarding experience for those with an affection for the more diverse and inclusive varieties of classic era, old school progressive rock.
