Aural Hallucinations - 2025 - Flocking to the Nozone
(79:08: Aural Hallucinations)
Here we have the third album from Dr. Space (Øresund Space Collective, Doctors of Space, Black Moon Circle, etc.) and Matthew Couto (Kind, ex-Elder), following on from 2020’s ‘Alucinações Auditivas’ and 2021’s ‘Hearing What You See’. Scott flew to Massachusetts in March this year to record with Matt, and it was actually the first time they had even been in the same room together, with the other recordings completed remotely. Due to the two musicians working together instead of remotely the music took twists and turns they did not expect, with the heavily layered instruments also having field noises added by Lúis Antero not far from where Scott lives in Portugal. Talking of the instruments, on this release they utilised Pittsburgh Modular, Custom Modular, MOOG Spectravox, MOOG Opus 3, Jen SX1000 synthesizer, Bastl Kastle, Bastl Drum Kastle!, MFOS mini-modular, multiple guitar effects pedals (MXR-Reverb, Phaser, Carbon Copy, RAT, Snare Trap).
I have listened to a great many of Scott’s recordings this year, probably more than in any other (although I first came across ØSC’s debut nearly 20 years back), and I relish each and every one as he has such a strong command of synths to be able to create real passion and emotion which is very difficult indeed in this style of music which is heavily based on Space rock and Krautrock. The field recordings are a wonderful touch, bringing a sense of normality to a somewhat strange world in a similar manner utilised by Gridfailure. The base recordings were completed in two days before being taken by Scott to mix and master at home, and the result is something which is hugely complex, with a tangible weight to it, as we are taken on a journey which at times is hypnotic and totally engrossing. It is music which must be played on headphones so one can insulate everything away from normality, as there is something very science fiction about everything which is going on, and is the perfect soundtrack to the Isaac Asimov book I am currently reading.
I have yet more of Scott’s music waiting to be played and reviewed, as his output is prodigious, but the quality is always high and this is yet another which is worth discovering.
