Tangerine Dream - 1975 - Rubycon [50th Anniversary Edition]

(5xCD Box Set, Esoteric Recordings)

I have long had a soft spot for Tangerine Dream’s wonderful sixth album, so was really intrigued when I heard there was going to be a 50th anniversary 5-disc set being released, and I was definitely not disappointed. Nearly five hours in length, disc one features the remastered original stereo mix, along with an extended introduction of ‘Rubycon’ which has been mixed by Steven Wilson, while the next two discs contain the complete concert recorded at The Rainbow in London in October 1974 while the last two contain the complete concert at The Royal Albert Hall in April 1975 (which featured Michael Hoening replacing Peter Baumann). As well as the music, there is a fascinating booklet containing loads of photos and press snippets as well as a new essay by Tangerine Dream expert Wouter Bessels.

Unless you already love this album this is not a set you will be purchasing, no matter what I say, but if you are already a fan then then this is a wonderful collection featuring Tangerine Dream at their peak. I must also mention a non-musical element which made me smile as John Peel, in his Rainbow introduction, tells the audience it is incredibly dangerous to listen to ‘Phaedra’ when driving alone on a motorway in the middle of the night with traffic in the other carriageway, and then tells everyone to do it! Each concert was improvised, each musician following the lead of the others, three master synth players (all attempting to keep their instruments in tune due to the vagaries of their equipment), breaking the boundaries of modern music and creating something other worldly and special, and even though the band is still active, when this album and concerts were recorded they were in their prime.

Yet another example of how to best treat a classic album, this extended set is a “must purchase” for any fan of the band and is something I have thoroughly enjoyed playing as it takes the listener to a very different place and time entirely.
