Öresund Space Collective - 2025 - Jamvofrijonia
(50:36; Ôresund Space Collective)
Here we have what has been lovingly described as jam #17 from the Stockholm Sessions, Dec 10th, 2024. That day in the studio there was Mattias (drums), Jonathan (guitar, violin), Christian (guitar), Jiri (bass), Mogens (synths), Dr. Space (Moog Spectravox), Love (congas, percussion) and KG (Mellotron, Mini- Moog), all looking to each other for inspiration. I admit to having long been a fan of this band, having reviewed their debut when it was released in 2006, and after more than 40 albums containing assorted improvised jams, they keep producing the goods, and this is possibly their strongest yet.
As well as the rhythm section and a percussionist we have two guitarists (including one who switches to violin when the time is right) and three keyboard players, and it is down to the latter to provide the atmosphere and the backdrop, the rhythm section to provide some sort of foundation and melody, while all the time we have the guitarists turning up the amps and having a blast. I have been listening to a lot of solo work from Dr. Space recently, so that may be tempering my memory, but I am sure this is one of the heaviest directly guitar-driven albums from OSC I have come across. Admittedly, I have only heard a small amount of their canon, but whereas I normally find myself slowly drifting along in a galaxy of their creation, this has far more in common with Hawkwind and a powering live act with strobes and dynamic dramatic intent.
It may be more than 50 minutes long and being composed by everyone as they go along, but this is music with force and direction which feels less improvised and more of something which has been rehearsed and brought together by masters of space rock. The more I listen to this the more I get from it, and the more I play it the more I want to play it again. If you have ever been put off by the size of their discography (I felt that way about Zappa for many years) then just dive in and start with this one. Twenty years on from their debut they are taking their sounds to a whole new level.
