Dominic Sanderson - 2025 - Blazing Revelations
(45:04; Dominic Sanderson)
At one point last year Dominic Sanderson’s second album was in the Top 10 of the PA charts (now at #40) which got me quite intrigued as to what it was like as this was someone, I had not previously come across. He hails from Wakefield, a city I lived close to before moving to the other side of the world (not sure if that is one of the reasons I left, but it could be) On this album he provides electric & acoustic guitars, vocals and Mellotron and is joined by Tristan Apperley (bass, violin), Jacob Hackett (drums & percussion), Embiye Adalı (Mellotron, Hammond organ, clavinet, Fender Rhodes, piano) and Andy Frizell ( tenor, alto & baritone saxophones, flute).
There are only four tracks, but the album is 45 minutes long and given one of the numbers is just six minutes in length it shows the others are nice and juicy. This is complex Seventies retro progressive rock, which is also quite dark, and is undoubtedly heavily influenced by VDGG while at other times it comes across more like Discipline (although given they were also influenced by VDGG perhaps that is not surprising). There are plenty of Mellotrons in the complex melange of sound, while saxophones are also very important indeed very much in the style of David Jackson.
I am not hugely keen on the falsetto vocals which are utilised in places, which although it is quite Gabrielesque I find they detract from the overall. There has been a large amount of overdubbing, especially with multiple saxophones and keyboards, and I wonder if they are able to fully reproduce this onstage, but the complex and clunky sounds being created certainly grab one’s attention. This certainly sounds as if it was released more than 50 years ago, and if VDGG/Hammill/Discipline with Floydian touches here and there (especially on “Faithless Folly”) interest you then I suggest you dig into this as there is much on here to enjoy.
