Marco Machera - 2023 - Dormiveglia [mini-review]
(38:05, Baracca & Burattini)
Italian artist Marco Machera are out with the album "Dormiveglia", and progressive rock is probably the best manner in which to define the musical landscapes explored on this production. It is the jazzrock tradition that is the dominating aspect of this album, and the landscapes are explored in a distinctly elegant manner here and often with a bit of a pop music sensibility that reminds me ever so slightly of the earlier solo albums of Norwegian artist Bendik Hofseth. But folk and world music elements are brought into play too, elegant orchestral textures are integral elements in some of the songs, and at one point we are heading into a bit more of a chamber rock landscape too. The vocals are calm and compelling throughout, adding a bit of an emphasis to the pop music sensibility with its soft but also commanding role, and the arrangements in general have a soft and borderline ambient music feel to them at times that further strengthens the compelling characteristics of this production. An album to seek out of elegant jazzrock with a broader general appeal that could and probably should have a mainstream appeal sounds like music you'd like to become more familiar with.
