Ring Van Möbius - 2023 - The Song That Wasn't Actually a Song (Do They Think It’s Jazz?) [mini-review]

(07:46; Apollon Records Prog)

Norwegian band Ring Van Möbius are out with the single "The Song That Wasn't Actually a Song (Do They Think It’s Jazz?)", and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. This good, old fashioned single with an A side and a B side feature the titular track on the A side, and here we get the organ and keyboards dominated variety of progressive rock this band specialize in explored in a both atmospheric laden and a more expressive manner. Complete with some passages sporting more of a jazz-oriented mode of delivery, contradicting part of the cover art of this release, and also a few cosmic sound effects and a little bit of a charming addition with children chiming in for some of the vocal parts. The B side is a organ dominated take on Grieg's 'Anitra's Dans', in this rendition managing to emphasize the folk music aspects of this composition in a neat manner even when exploring the song in a manner fans of good, old ELP will salivate over. A production to seek out if a retro-oriented variety of progressive rock following the ELP tradition is music you generally like and enjoy.
