Sidesister - 2023 - Nothing [mini-review]
(48:10; Sidesister)
New Zealand band Sidesister are out with the album "Nothing", and this is a production that may be of interest also for fans of progressive rock. Back in the day I guess this album would have been described as a bit of an art pop album. The songs are fairly straight forward affairs as far as structure goes, with vocals as a dominant element and with songs that do have a catchy and appealing element of pop music sensibility. We also get nods towards a bit of jazz, a funky bass makes several appearances along the way, and some of the tunes feature piano motifs that may have been inspired by the creations of John or Joel. More interesting from a progressive rock point of view are various off kilter instrument details and regular inclusions of orchestral inspired surges and overlays in the arrangements that do expand the boundaries of the landscapes explored quite a bit at times. A liberal amount of folk music and Americana elements are also noted. A production to seek out if music that blend pop music sensibilities with some progressive rock ideals strikes you as a generally interesting landscape to explore.
