Treebeard - 2021 - Nostalgia [mini-review]
(63:00; Bird's Robe Records)
Australian band Treebeard released the album "Nostalgia" back in 2021, with a reissue being made this fall, and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. The orientation of choice here will generally be sorted under the post-rock tradition, and the majority of the songs here comes with one opening section that explore gentler and borderline ambient moods and atmospheres while the second and final section revolves around a more majestic and heavy set arrangement. We get some instances of songs with either intermediate parts or the typical ebb and flow execution post-rock is known for, but on this album those are the exceptions. Besides the plucked gentle guitar dominated and semi-acoustic gentle opening passages this band also opts for a few displays of cosmic sounds for their initial sections, and when they switch over to fully loaded and textured mode the band can on occasion be a bit more intense, reaching out towards and crossing the border into post-metal on a few occasions. The riffs have a tendency to be a bit chunkier than what is the norm too, but the band retains the majestic soaring textured harmony overlays that is something of a fixture for the style too. An additional detail is that some of the songs also feature vocals, and that they are applied in a careful manner that fits the landscapes they are a part of. For those with an interest in the post-rock part of the progressive rock universe, I gather that this album should be a pleasing and rewarding experience.
