Aawks - 2023 - Luna [mini-review]

(20:46; Black Throne Productions)

Canadian band Aawks are out with the EP "Luna", and this is a production that might be of interest also for fans of progressive rock and progressive metal. This EP opens and concludes with material I would guesstimate is at the core of the band's general style: Classic era doom metal with a liberal amount of vintage Black Sabbath references, but with a greater emphasis on the psychedelic elements that Iommi and his bandmates mainly had as undercurrents on their classic albums. To have a song from A Flock of Seagulls transformed into a vintage stoner rock going on post-rock is perhaps more interesting from a progressive rock point of view, and that Aawks can master the more gentle, floating and cosmic varieties of psychedelic music is something they document firmly with their take on Pink Floyd's 'Julia's Dream', another song which likely will be of interest for a progressive rock interested audience. A production to seek out by those with a fascination for vintage era doom metal given a liberal psychedelic seasoning, as well as those intrigued by what a band of this kind sounds like when heading into more defined progressive rock landscapes.
