Arabs in Aspic - 2013 - Pictures in a Dream [mini-review]
(43:58, Karisma Records [2023 Edition]
Norwegian band Arabs in Aspic released the album "Pictures in a Dream" back in 2013, with a remixed and remastered edition reissued now in 2023, and progressive rock is the style explored on this production. This is a band that have their sights firmly set somewhere in the 1970's, and their eclectic and varied take on classic era progressive rock does venture a bit outside of the progressive rock universe at times too in terms of tendencies and possible references. Gentle pastoral passages and romantic, atmospheric laden sequences with liberal amounts of vintage keyboards are both present here, with the latter calling upon a band like Camel at times. More full-fledged forays into a more elaborate variety of symphonic progressive rock can be found too, as well as inclusions of both psychedelic and cosmic details as recurring elements. The most striking aspect of this album is the hard progressive rock though, and at times omitting the progressive bit in part or in full too. With possible references to bands such as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath in terms of specific moments, riffs or arrangement details. With one token side step into the world of blues based hard rock along the way. This is a charming and compelling blend of old school hard progressive rock and vintage era progressive rock, with a little bit of a vintage hard rock flirt attached, and should be a rewarding experience for those who tend to enjoy exploring landscapes of this kind.
