Disorientation - 2023 - Survival Mode [mini-review]

(16:06; Disorientation)

Canadian band Disorientation are out with the EP "Survival Mode", and progressive metal is possibly the best manner in which to define the landscapes explored on this production. It is very much an extreme variety of the form we get here, with the songs pulsating between tight and hard hitting fast paced extreme metal excursions, slower doom metal oriented side steps and a little bit of a crossover flirt with hardcore added towards the end too. All complete with harsh, disruptive and distorted lead vocals. The progressive aspect here comes in the form of reeds and brass that sometimes steps in with distinct classical music oriented interludes and at other times with distorted varieties of the same, with both instruments also appearing in the different metal oriented excursions as standalone or combined additions that either adds a classical music component or a noise component and in some cases also combines both. With occasional expansions of the lead vocals into what I'd describe as a more classical inspired mode of singing too. It is an unusual mix of elements and an unusual use of these elements too, which makes me think that progressive metal is the best manner in which to define these landscapes. A production to seek out by those with a taste and affection for a more experimental and unusual variety of extreme progressive metal.
