Eric Price - 2023 - Piano Sonata #4 [mini-review]

(27:37; Navona Records)

US composer Eric Price is out with the mini album "Piano Sonata #4", where his composition is explored by pianist Anna Kislitsyna. While I'm very much a novice in the field of classical music, I was left suitably impressed by this three part composition and the execution given this creation by pianist Kislitsyna. The first part revolve around more playful themes, with a quicker pace showcasing a strong technical ability from the performer with a requirement to be very careful about the use of harder and softer use of the tangents to create the flow needed. The second part revolves around a slower overall tempo and a more restrained touch, with the effect being a more melancholic and mournful overall mood and atmosphere, broken up by occasional dramatic impact moments where a firm and tight note execution is called upon. The concluding final part strikes me as a mix of the previous two parts, with playful and joyful escapades broken up by slower and more mournful interludes, where the constant ebb and flow gives me the impression that this was also the most challenging of the three parts to perform. A production to seek out by those who enjoy good quality classical piano music and that revolves around the moods and atmospheres described.
