Edenya - 2025 - The Secret Destination You Are Looking For
(54:54; Edenya)
Edenya are a French band who are here back with their third album, although it is the very first time I have come across them. Apparently, they commenced as an instrumental project by songwriter, keyboard player and guitarist Marco back in 2010, but they have now evolved into a full band. The rest of the line-up is Ingrid Denis (vocals), Juliette Carradec (violin), Jean-Paul Cartigny (bass) and Sylvie Sj (drums, djembe). Apart from Marco, none of the rest of the band played on the debut album, only Juliette survives from 2023’s ‘Another Place’, and there has been a different female singer on each album, but I can only hope that Ingrid manages to stay the course as her delicate style is an absolute delight.
When I first started playing this, I felt I had them nailed as obviously it was an ambient band with folk and prog tendencies, very nice indeed. However, it did not take long for me to realise that Marco has many influences and has no problem bringing them into his music even if that means the songs vary greatly, so we have Middle Eastern stylings here, melodic hard rock there, some more commercial elements over yonder, crossover prog here, a touch of Neo there, all making for an album which is truly sumptuous. Ingrid has been involved in multiple different projects and bands, but I truly do hope she stays around as she obviously has a great connection with Marco and his music, and she is able to produce all the different stylings he is looking for. The arrangements are intense, shifting and moving, and it really is an album which demands close attention as there is so much going on. I first played this while doing something else and kept checking to see if it was actually the same band as there are so many changes taking place. We get some mini epics at nine and ten minutes in length, but we also get plenty at just three, again showing the diversity within the approach.
This is a very polished and interesting release which refuses to stay within any particular pigeonhole and is all the better for it. Edenya use a wonderfully broad musical palette and will be of interest to all those who want their music to be varied yet always enjoyable and with a common thread.
