Prolusion.
German artist Mike Oldhill (or Michael Altenberger if you like) has been releasing albums with his own distinct take on the progressive rock tradition for the past 15 years, where the first of these appeared back in 2011 and the second in 2016. At the start of 2026 his third solo album appeared. It is named "On the Brink", and was self released by the artist.
Analysis.
The two most important details of note for the landscapes explored on this production is that all of them are instrumental, and all of them come with a very distinct retro-oriented sound and expression. This is an artist with an obvious love and passion for the progressive rock of the 1970s in general and the symphonic varieties of this form in particular.
All of the compositions exist inside of an constantly evolving structure, with occasional fluctuations that may be described as ebb and flow. If not in terms of moving back and forth between some set patterns or styles, then at least in terms of arrangement qualities and intensity levels. These are creations that move, develop, change and move forward again.
Impulses from the more accessible parts of the progressive rock spectrum are very much present here, with many passages being more in line with the flowing and atmospheric laden music many will associate with a band like Camel. More majestic and expressive displays are at hand too, many of which to my mind reminds me ever so slightly of a band like Genesis, with some intricate and more expressive tangents that are closer to the Gentle Giant ballpark. With a subtle nod towards jazz being a slight presence on occasion too.
Mystical flowing passages and more exotic flavored, Middle-Eastern inspired landscapes are just as much of a staple here as elegant flute-driven careful escapades and majestic, powerful keyboard and guitar combinations. All of which are given instrument lead roles too of course, alongside the piano, and we even get a charming and playful marimba inclusion to kick off one of the compositions. We also get a little bit of a Latin inspired vibe at times here, in a subtly charming and playful manner I should add. While the title track is a standalone piano creation that arguably has a little bit more of a classical music vibe to it.
Conclusion.
Oldhill's third solo album "On the Brink" is a most charming trip back into a vintage oriented progressive rock sound and expression, where the accessible, the exotic and and the expressive flavours of the symphonic tradition all have their place and time. Usually with all of them being present in each of the compositions here. If you enjoy music of this kind and nature being explored in an instrumental manner, this is an album that you should find rather appealing I'd imagine.
